  1.                   WHEN RECEIVING 'NEW' PD DISKS

  3. When you buy or swop some new PD software, Always check it with a 
  4. virus killer.  This way you will know none of your other disks is 
  5. at  risk.  If  you have ONE disk with a virus  then  your  ENTIRE 
  6. collection of disks are at risk!!.
  7.  
  8. There  are  many  types  of  virus,   most  if  not  all  can  be 
  9. disastrous.  Is it is imperative that you do use a virus killer 
  10. on  your  disks.  There  are a couple of  virus  killers  in  the 
  11. Public Domain.  These virus  killers  are quite  competent with 
  12. most viruses,  but unfortunately  there  are people out there, who 
  13. take great delight in producing NEW viruses which they know some 
  14. old virus killers can't detect.  Thus making your  PD  virus  
  15. killer useless.  The best thing you  can  do  to protect  your  
  16. disks is to purchase a  commercial  virus  killer.

  18. The  best  one  on the market as far as I  am  concerned  is  the 
  19. ULTIMATE  VIRUS  KILLER by DOUGLAS  COMMUNICATIONS,  this  is  an 
  20. excellent product,  and happens to be the virus killer I use  to 
  21. test  my  disks.  As  we speak  Version  5.5,  has  just  become 
  22. available at £9.99.

  24. No-one should be without this piece of software,  this product is 
  25. continually  being  updated,  to keep track of all  the  'new'  and 
  26. previously undetected viruses around.
  27.  
  28. And  remember,  if you have one infected disk,  then your  ENTIRE 
  29. disk collection is at risk. Its a small outlay for the protection 
  30. and security this product will provide.

  32. And a helpful tip is make all your disks WRITE PROTECTED (If  you 
  33. look at the front of the disk,  then look in the top  right  hand 
  34. corner,  you  will see a hole.  Turn the disk over and  carefully 
  35. move the little plastic square up - you should now be able to see 
  36. through this gap.  Its best to use a pen/pencil nib, and remember 
  37. to  be gentle).  Now you won't be able to become infected with  a 
  38. virus,  because  now it is not possible to write  (SAVE)  to  the 
  39. disk. Since this is how your disk becomes infected.

  41. Only  one  draw back with making your disks  write  protected  is 
  42. although  you  can LOAD things from your disk you can't  SAVE  to 
  43. your  disk.  If you need to SAVE something on your disk you  will 
  44. have  to  move  the  little plastic square  back  to  the  closed 
  45. position,  you will now be able to SAVE to the disk, but you  are 
  46. now vulnerable to viruses.

  48. Another  tip  you could use is once you have finished  using  one 
  49. disk  and  you  wish to use a different disk,  is  to  turn  your 
  50. computer  completely  off,  with the switch on the back  of  your 
  51. computer  (NOT the RESET button).  Keep your computer turned  off 
  52. for about 30 seconds,  that should be enough.  That way you won't 
  53. infect any other disks should that disk be infected.
